Gaeta in South Lazio Italy

The Harbour and Port of Gaeta

On the opposite side of the peninsula there is the long coastal road along the seafront, at the end (nearest to the bell tower of the Cathedral of San Erasmo) is the Guardia di Finanza Naval School, situated on the Punta Stendardo promontory.

A little further along the seafront, in the direction of the centre of Gaeta, is a memorial to the Italian born explorer Giovanni Caboto (John  Cabot), who was born in Gaeta. By 1476 he was living in Venice.  He became an navigator and explorer, and lived in Valencia in Spain between the years of 1490 and 1493 before moving to Bristol  in 1495.  In 1493, when reports  reached England of the westward passage of Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic Ocean, Cabot began to make plans for a more direct crossing, to what he believed to be Asia.  His ship was named the Matthew.  Cabot set sail from Bristol in May 1497 on a more northerly course, and eventually landed on what is now called Cape Breton Island. Then he continued his voyage sailing along the coasts of Labrador, Newfoundland, and New England.

As you look across the Bay of Gaeta you can see the dramatic Aurunci Mountains sweeping down to the sea, and the neighbouring town of Formia. Continuing along the seafront there is a fashionable yachting marina.

Gaeta has been the home port for the flag ship of the U.S. Sixth Fleet since 1967.   The base was located on Monte Orlando, overlooking the Gulf of Gaeta.  In recent years, however, the US Navy had been downsizing its presence in the Mediterranean, and the number of staff in Gaeta has been cut dramatically.  The current flagship is the USS Mount Whitney, which superceded the USS LaSalle.
